This place just sucks. Every time I am invited to go here, I get sad. First and foremost, the staff. The bartenders are just not attentive nor do they care if you get served or not. I stood at the bar and waited for 20 minutes for two beers. 2 bottled beers...not draft, no glass, no special order. 2 Miller Lites. It wasn't just me, the guy sitting at the bar made a comment about how long I was waiting. Next, the bands... they are never good AND it is way too loud for a bar that small. Yes, I am at the age where I don't need loud music, tons of shots and tons of male attention to have fun but I just can't see how obnoxious loud music is fun for anyone. Well, anyone besides the way too old woman in the short shorts, low cut top and poorly dyed blonde hair dirty dancing with every guy she could rub her chest up against. Finally, the beer garden. The back is set up with a cover and under the cover it has a bar and outside the covered area it has a patio with tables, chairs and one bean bag game (ONE GAME??). We went outside to escape the inside noise and it started pouring. There were numerous gaps in the cover which got us all wet and then the poor bartender had to cover the large flat screen tv with a tarp... a bit ridiculous to cover such an expensive tv with a tarp. Overall, there are way better bars on the southside besides this one. I try to steer clear of this one.

depends on who u go there with.it was way to over packed and some rock band was setting up but i was no where near being buzzed so tryin 2 squeeze into the bar was sucky.they said the patron was chilled when it wasnt at all. was not worth going to and this was in jan 2009

This place is very hit or miss. During the summer and on typical college break times, it is jam packed with freshly 21 year olds. However, sometimes during the down times, there are decent live bands and less crowds. I like their outdoor patio area. It is a far different feel from the inside. I much rather the company of my friends out where I can hear them... away from the crowds and loud music.

This is my favorite place to go in the South Suburbs. The live music is good, specials are great and theres usually a good amount of people there! The security guys can be assholes but overall most of them are pretty cool. Kevin the bartender is the man!

Went there on a Saturday with my boyfriend, we moved away from the area and decided to visit over the weekend. We paid 5 dollar cover charge each and got our drinks. Not even being there for 10 min, the security meat head rudely came at my boyfriend telling him he could not be there because he had no sleeves. Hmm hold on I'm pretty sure YOUR security let us in and now your uninviting us? Haha very professional. Not only is no sleeves in the summer common for someone to not be let in because of that is ridiculous yettt you can allow girls with ass cheeks hanging out and belly shirts running around? Interesting. learn how to run your business and don't push away good paying and tipping customers over Sleeveless shirts!

The towers were great but the bartenders were sub par at best the didn't even know how to open a Budweiser that wasn't a twist top. Mixed drinks were light barely half a shot defiantly not worth my money safe to say this is a one and done

This place isn't too bad. It can get super packed at nights especially nights with good drink specials. They usually have bands playing that are obnoxiously loud which makes it impossible to talk with anyone. I prefer not to be there at night. However I don't mind coming to this place earlier for some food and a couple drinks. Pizza is good and they give it free on Fridays. They also have a decent sized beer garden which is great in the summer.

I am currently sitting at a table and have been for 25 minutes. Not one waitress has come to the table. It wasn't busy at all when I came in and now it's picking up. This is insanely rude.

This place has the best specials around! 25 cent Jumbo wings on Monday and Wednesday, and the wings are amazing! I could come here everyday for lunch, always leave satisfied and not spend a lot. I highly recommend this place!

On the Friday I was there, it was very loud in there with out a band playing, everyone was talking very loud ( people use your inside voices ) the free pizza was not bad for free pizza. the table service was very poor, the waitresses, when not standing around talking at the wait station would wonder aimlessly around it was hard to order drinks and a long wait till they were delivered. ordered chips and salsa when I got them the chips were stale and I mean very stale like they were months old. make me wonder about the freshness of the other food items. the waitress wanted to hold my credit card to run a tab, I just paid cash, how do I know what going on with who ever has the card,? I guess they don't trust their customers to pay their bills.

Zero stars but I couldn't post this review without giving at least one. This is the worst bar I've ever been to. Incredibly rude staff. Overpriced drinks. Horrible live music. An all-around terrible time. Avoid at all costs.

Not a bad place to grab a beer. The men's bathroom is usually messy. The beer garden is nice, especially if you smoke. Every time I've been there I've felt like I didn't belong there, not my kind of people? They hVe some good music performances every now and again but I'm not too keen on paying a cover when I can drink across the street where the beer is cheaper. When it's busy you can expect a wait. Have waited well over 20 minutes for a beer. Ehhhh

  • Mike M.

Was not impressed by this place. First there's a cover charge, which for a suburban bar is stupid. The music was ridiculously loud, to the point where the speakers were crackling. The bathroom had long lines the entire time I was there. The "Chicago style pizza" was average, but I'd like to let the owners know that thin crust pizzas are New York style not Chicago style. This was my first and last visit.

Great fun weekend atmosphere for young party people. Lunch offers awesome food specials and the burgers are great. Tacos and nachos are above average, especially for the price. Plenty of Tvs and very friendly service. All good things!

I've only been here for karaoke Monday, but had a good time! The food and drinks are decently priced with large portions. You do need to go up to the bar to order, but that's fine. Be prepared for the bartender to spend time talking to their friends, but once you get their attention, it's fine. The karaoke dj is a nice guy with a good song selection. And there's a nice beer garden for smokers out back with a covered area.

So... I've been drinking more beers lately, if you ever see me all ya gotta do is poke my plush belly for indisputable proof of that fact. The first question I ask at ANY bar: "What Craft Beers do you have?" Holstein's has plenty, and they're on tap - $4.50 a pint. There's a picture of some of the Crafts the have here: yelp.com/biz_photos/j-w-… they have some more in bottle form. They've got awesome daily specials here too, food is prett on point too. Hells ya, I'll take a $3 Italian Beef Sammich (Tuesday Special)! Hells ya, I'll try a Sheppard's Pie for $9 (Errday) Hells to the Mutha Effin' ya, you better believe I'll have some FREE PIZZA on Fridays!!! (After 3PM) No gimmicks on that FREE PIZZA either. Walk in, sit down ask for whatever pizza you like... no "Must order 3 bottles of Dom with every pizza" nope! It's free like it says, all I paid for were my 2 bottles of 'In Heat Wheat' and took the rest home. BTW - try the 'In Heat Wheat' purdy darn tootin' Servers are on the level, I haven't had to wait more than say... 2 or 3 minutes before I got a menu and a cold beverage. Refills come quick and they also don't automatically assume you'll be sticking to the same beer, good for me... I like to mix it up. Spacious is the easiest way to describe the inside. It doesn't really look it from the front, but there's a lot of room in there. Plenty of tables and a large island (peninsula really) bar with at least 20 chairs around it. Those chairs... well spaced. The outside is HUGE. There's a covered and semi-enclosed covered and heated area with a second bar. Keep going past the hangy plastic things and you end up on the fenced back patio, plenty of seating out there too. Looks like it's be a blast on those hot summer nights. All in alls... I like it, it's a solid joint.

Great place to grab a drink and a bite to eat, especially if you are just getting off the train from downtown. Let's be clear, this is a bar / pub that serves good food and drink, it isn't a restaurant / TGI Fridays, etc. With that said, what they do, they do good. The service overall is good and attentive. The food is above average for typical bar food and I would even say that their tacos and pizzas are excellent. The prices for their specials Wed. through Fri. are great values and I highly recommend going for that alone. Free pizza friday isn't a pizza buffet, it is a made to order pizza! The beer garden has plenty of room and games to play as well as a service bar and allows smoking. This place is as clean as what you would expect of a bar that serves food. Not bad, not great. The bartenders, the waitresses, the barbacks, etc. have all been helpful. The only thing I would recommend is that if you are new to the place, do not sit on the south side of the bar if it isn't busy. Sometimes you have to wait to get the attention of the bartender because this isn't an area that is readily visible from where some of the bartender "hang out" when slow. This is probably the only negative I can think of and that is a pretty petty one at that. You want a decent bar with a pretty good selection of craft brews on tap and in bottle with good bar food, then this is a place to check out.

Great bar, awesome FREE pizza on Fridays but the service is terrible. Our waitress seemed really bothered to be our waitress, and she had a dirty look on her face the entire time we were there, she couldn't even fake a smile!!

My boyfriend and I regularly frequent Holstein's and I have to say that after going there for the past two years at least once a week, over the past 6 weeks or so the service level has really started to drop. I'm not sure if it's because of new waitresses/bartenders, but the newer staff is not as attentive and often times spend more time talking to one another as opposed to paying attention to those at their table or even the bar. A couple weeks ago we waited outside for about 5 minutes, the waitress came out and didn't even notice us so I had to go in and get us drinks. It's gotten to the point where we try to only go when we know Sarah, Danielle, Val, Carl or Diana are working (who we love and cannot say enough good things about) because we know they are really the only ones who give good service. We truly love Holsteins and really consider it 'our' bar...it's always our go-to place and I would hate for that to change. I hope the owners recognize that regulars are the foundation of the business for a bar like this and really start stressing to appreciate them more. On a more positive note, the bouncers are always friendly, the food is great (especially the nachos and pizza), the beer garden is nice and the Bears specials/entertainment never disappoint.

Since my previous review Holsteins has had some positive changes. I have had better service, food, and all around better experience in the past couple months. (im frequent to the specials of wing W and free pizza F) Shannon is a great server.

Not a fan of this place at all and they tend to over-serve people. I guess age has lots to do with it. I was here back in my twenties and it was fun, but as you get older, you grow out of this scene. Funny thing is, those same people still frequent this place! It's like the south side bubble that people just cannot seem to grow out of. Same people, same music, same scene. It's an ok place if you are young, enjoy loud and crowded atmospheres, enjoy meat-market goers, stand in line for bathrooms and all that, but if you want to have a nice time out with friends, go someplace else.

If you want to grab a cheap meal & drink with a friend, Holsteins has 25 cent chicken wings on M&W, and free pizza on F. The wings are tasty & there are a couple unique flavor options (chipotle lime, etc) that set them apart. The free pizza on Fridays is also good and there is no hassle getting the pizza FOR FREE. Just order your drinks & order the pizza (large pizza, 2 topping limit). I've never ordered more than 1 pizza, but I believe you can get multiple free pizzas. Thursday evenings is somewhat of a college night: lots of young people, a DJ & a makeshift dance floor. Probably fun for people ages 21-23, but otherwise you'll feel old. The only negative is some times the wait staff is not the most attentive/seems annoyed, but its never been a huge issue for my friends or I.

Went there for a drink last night. I gave the bartender a $50 bill for a couple drinks that were $10. She comes back five minutes later and gave me $9.75 back. Even if she thought I gave a $20 it didn't make sense. When I called her over and told her I gave her a $50, without even thinking about it or looking at the money she gave me a fake apology and brought the rest of the cash back. No question they do this all night and most likely don't get called out because most of the people that are there are too drunk to notice.

It's a divey bar. But for the divey bar it is, it is pretty good. They have Karaoke sometimes, I don't remember which days. the price is usually very good. And they have other options for beer besides bud and miller which is good. Usually when I go, there is only one person behind the bar, so sometimes it is difficult to get a drink. I don't believe I have ever had a waitress when we've gone. So even on a busy night you have to fight your way through the bar. But, for a night out just to go socialize with friends, it's pretty nice.

An awesome place to hang when it's not $1 beer night. (Thursdays) Just too crowded that day. Tuesdays are my favorite with free poker and great food specials. I HIGHLY recommend the Chicken Club on Pretzel Bun (like $5); though $2 Beef sandwiches is also awesome. I also don't know how anyone can pass up Free Pizza on Fridays. The staff is friendly and courteous. I don't believe for a second that one of them changed their tip as one reviewer stated. If you're leaving a $2 tip for a $60 bill you should be smacked upside the head anyway. Also, many places with parties of specified sizes usually have gratuity included...though I don't know if they do that. It's called Hollsteins Saloon for a reason. It was many things since it was built some 100 years ago. I think it might have even been a brothel in the early years (ah the good days LOL) It has a rustic western feel to it due to the old classic wood features and ornate accents. On country night it would have to be a flashback of the old west. Bottom line, it's a fine place to watch the game or just chill out and have some food. Plenty of specials and relaxing atmosphere most days of the week.

My wife and I stopped in for a quick adult beverage before going to dinner with some great friends. Nice sports bar, great service, beer was cold...what more can you ask for???? Oh yes it was happy hour...the ice cold, long neck bottles of beers was cheap! Now that gets 5 stars! SWEETTTTTT

I use to come here allllll the time for 50 cent chicken wings and had the best service every time, so when I was going to be in the area and we wanted to get food before the Sugarland concert this was the first place I thought of. To bad my experience this time was not good at all. we walk in and the place is empty, I mean I get it, it's 3:30 in the afternoon a little to early to start drinking for some people I guess. We sat at a table and waited for our waitress to take our drink order and bring us menus.....waiting.....waiting.....after about 15 mins of waiting I went up to the bartender and asked where our waitress was. Her response, " I'm the only one here right now, you'll have to order drinks and food through me." uuuummm ok, that would have been swell if you told us that when we walked in and not let us sit there so long. I was annoyed by now, but we were here and just wanted to eat. I ordered drinks for everyone and I brought them back to the table with menus. Everyone figured out what they wanted to eat and one by one we all went up to the bar to place our order.....this was SUPER annoying and I felt like she should split her tip with me since really Iwas doing all the work for her!!!! They did bring the food out to the table(phew...thought I was going to have to go in the kitchen and make it myself too). The food was really good....which is what saved them from a one star review. I ordered the buffalo chicken breast and fries. The buffalo sauce was perfect, not to spicey and they did not overload the chicken in it. The fries were hot and crispy, you know....regualr bar fries. The whole time we were there the music was sooooo loud. We asked the bartender if she could turn it down since we couldnt even hear the person next to you talk....no joke it was that loud. She said for some reason she couldn't get it to turn down but after this song(since someone had paid for it) she would just turn it off. Ok, thanks, that would be swell. Except she NEVER turned the music off....it just kept playing horrible loud music. I'm sad to say I don't think I will be back here to eat after this experience!!

This place has the best burger in town. Tacos are pretty good too, although I'm pretty sure the salsa was Pace Picante lol. Yes it is a loud dark bar with a younger crowd sometimes, but if you go earlier in the afternoon or evening you can avoid this.

I feel kind of bad knocking down Holstein's with a two-star. But then again, no I don't. Some people consider the loud live music a plus. I consider it a minus because in my experience the music sucks and I would rather hear someone drowning amplified to 150 dB. There may be young people there, but I guess I'm spoiled by city bars because I'm turned off by the median age of 35 at Holstein's. You have to admit, there are a good number of creepy old guys here. And last but not least, I would have better luck getting a drink here if I left the bar, went to the nearest Home Depot, purchased a Sawzall, returned to the bar, sawed my way through the actual bar, and poured myself a beer. (I could have made that rant much longer but I chose to have mercy.) Also, there are good odds no one would notice because half the time the bartenders aren't even behind the bar. The point is, it takes forever to get a drink when it's not even crowded. I'm going with two stars instead of one because it's not totally devoid of good features. For instance, it's very close to other bars you can patronize when you leave Holstein's.

My husband and I go there at least twice a week. Their food is very tasty and so affordable. Wednesday $.25 chicken wings, Friday FREE Pizza served at your table family size. Drinks are reasonable priced, Thursdays $1 beer!!!! Overall great place

The only reason this place gets a 1 is because I had to give it a rating. Went there last night with some friends at approximately 10pm +/-. There were 3 other people at the bar whom appeared to be friends with the bartender. We stood around for 7 to 10 minutes before the bar helper acknowledged we were there and told us he could not serve alcohol and that we had to wait for the bartender; I found that to be interesting considering he was drunk as a skunk. The bartender finally comes around to us with a nasty attitude. One of the guys in the group asked him why the wait considering there was only 3 people there and he had nothing but attitude to give including tossing our id's at us and using profanity. We decided to leave never to return to this place again. It appears after going to the bar across the street and chatting with the bartender there, the rude service is a common complaint. This place needs better staff if they want to keep business and they should keep an eye on the under 21 help behind the bar considering he was drunk.

this place blows!!! lots of douche bags that look like they just got back from the jersey shore. fake ass women that are only worried about the hair and makeup. takes forever to get a drink. but hey stupid bartenders dint know how to give change so i got some free drinks and a few dollars out of it lol.

Overall, it's really just a typical suburban bar. It usually has a bunch of college aged people in it. The service is good when it's not crowded. But, if it's crowded and you don't like having nothing to drink, you might be best off ordering a new one when you're about half way through your current drink. There's really nothing special about this place. The only time I'll go there is if a band that I like is playing there... because I live close by.
